How A Jinn Impacted My Arabic Journey

Fourteen years ago, my journey with the Arabic language began—a journey that I hope to continue until my last breath. But where did it all start? What inspired me to dedicate my life to teaching and mastering Arabic? This is the story of how a pivotal moment involving trials and the power of the Quran sparked my passion for the Arabic language.

Reflecting on Life’s Trials

Before diving into my story, it’s important to recognize the wisdom behind life’s trials. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that when Allah loves a people, He tests them. These trials serve as opportunities to draw closer to Allah through patience, reliance, and dua—or they can cause one to stray further. It all depends on our response.

Looking back, I now see how the incident I experienced was both a test and a blessing. It pushed me to reflect, learn, and ultimately embark on a path that brought me closer to Allah. Let me take you back 14 years to when this all began.

The Life-Changing Incident

I was 16, just starting to practice my faith, memorizing parts of the Quran, and learning about Islam. One summer, a close family member became possessed by a jinn. Whether it was due to sihr (black magic) or some other reason, only Allah knows. What followed was a harrowing 10 days of witnessing the effects of possession and the power of the Quran.

During this time, my family and I performed ruqya (spiritual healing) by reciting Quran over the afflicted person. What struck me most was the jinn’s reaction to the Quran. It would scream, cry, and beg for us to stop, unable to withstand the words of Allah. This left me in awe: why was the Quran so powerful against the jinn, yet I felt no similar impact when reciting it?

A Turning Point

The incident planted a seed in my heart. I realized that my lack of understanding of the Quran’s meaning was the missing link. I could read the Quran, but without comprehending its message, I was unable to fully appreciate its beauty and power. This realization led me to a pivotal decision: I would dedicate myself to learning Arabic, the key to unlocking the Quran’s treasures.

The Journey Begins

I started studying Arabic with whatever resources were available. Over time, I delved deeper, eventually earning a degree in Arabic and immersing myself in Islamic literature. Learning Arabic was not just about understanding the Quran—it opened the doors to a vast world of Islamic knowledge, from Hadith and Fiqh to Tafseer and beyond.

As my journey progressed, I realized the importance of sharing this knowledge. Teaching Arabic became my mission, a way to help others connect with the Quran and deepen their understanding of Islam. Over the years, I’ve developed programs designed to guide students from beginners to mastering the language of the Quran.

Why Arabic Matters

Arabic is not just a language; it’s a gateway to understanding the Quran, the Sunnah, and the deen as a whole. While mastering Arabic can take time, even a foundational knowledge can transform your connection with Allah’s words.
